Daniel Dennett

Daniel C. Dennett was an American philosopher known for his work in philosophy of mind, cognitive science, and evolutionary biology. Dennett served as co-director of the Center for Cognitive Studies and as the Austin B. Fletcher Professor of Philosophy at Tufts University in Massachusetts. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Harvard University, studying with Willard Quine, and completed his Doctor of Philosophy in philosophy at the University of Oxford under Gilbert Ryle. His thesis has been translated into multiple languages.

Dennett's interdisciplinary research integrated artificial intelligence, neuroscience, and cognitive psychology to address the mind-body problem. He argued that consciousness and higher cognitive abilities are direct consequences of brain physiology. In his book "Consciousness Explained," Dennett proposed a unified, materialist theory of consciousness that generated significant debate in both philosophy and science. "Darwin's Dangerous Idea: Evolution and the Meaning of Life" was a finalist for the National Book Award for nonfiction. He also examined the evolution of religious thought in "Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon." Dennett authored more than 20 books, including "Kinds of Minds: Toward An Understanding of Consciousness" and "Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon."

Dennett was recognized as one of the "Four Horsemen" of New Atheism, alongside Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Christopher Hitchens. His research on consciousness contributed to his atheistic perspective, emphasizing the dependence of mental activity on the physical brain. Dennett often employed the strategy of presenting an opponent's strongest argument, a method he referred to as "steel-manning."

Dennett received several awards and honors, including the Jean Nicod Prize, the Mind and Brain Prize, and the Erasmus Prize. He held a Fulbright Fellowship, two Guggenheim Fellowships, and a fellowship at the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences. He was a Fellow of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, a Humanist Laureate of the International Academy of Humanism, and was named Humanist of the Year by the American Humanist Organization. His books reached bestseller status and his TED talks attracted millions of viewers.

In his later years, Dennett remained active in public discourse. After retiring, he wrote a memoir and addressed the societal implications of artificial intelligence, focusing on its potential to undermine trust. He died of interstitial lung disease, having previously survived major surgeries. Dennett continued to engage with students and the academic community until shortly before his death.
