
Dan W. Reicher is an entrepreneur, investor, policymaker, lawyer, and educator whose career spans government, the private sector, and academia, with a focus on clean energy and climate change. Reicher has served three U.S. presidents, testified before Congress more than 50 times, led the launch of Google's climate and clean energy initiatives, oversaw a $1.2 billion annual clean energy research and development budget as U.S. Assistant Secretary of Energy, and co-founded the nation's first investment firm dedicated to renewable energy project finance.
Reicher's government service includes roles as Assistant Secretary of Energy for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy and Department of Energy Chief of Staff during the Clinton administration, a member of President Obama's Transition Team and Co-chair of the Energy and Environment Team, and a staff member of President Carter's Commission on the Accident at Three Mile Island. He contributed to the energy components of the federal stimulus package and advised on energy and climate issues during the Obama campaign.
In the private sector, Reicher was president and co-founder of New Energy Capital Corp., a private equity firm investing in clean energy projects, and executive vice president of Northern Power Systems, a renewable energy company. At Google, he served as director of climate change and energy initiatives.
At Stanford University, Reicher was the founding executive director of the Steyer-Taylor Center for Energy Policy and Finance, a joint center of Stanford Law School and Stanford Graduate School of Business. He is a senior scholar, clean energy entrepreneur, and business and policy advisor at Stanford, as well as a distinguished fellow at the Irving Institute for Energy and Society, where he leads the Uncommon Dialogue on Northeast Rivers and Dams initiative. Reicher is also a research scholar at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment and co-teaches graduate-level courses on clean technology and the Chinese solar industry.
Reicher has received recognition for his work in the energy sector, including an honorary doctorate from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry and being named among the most influential figures in U.S. clean energy by Oilprice.com. He is a non-resident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and board chair of the American Council on Renewable Energy. Earlier in his career, Reicher served as an assistant attorney general in Massachusetts, an attorney with the Natural Resources Defense Council, and an adjunct professor at Yale University, Vermont Law School, and the University of Maryland. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in biology from Dartmouth College, a Juris Doctor from Stanford Law School, and has completed studies at Harvard Kennedy School and MIT.
