
Craig Biggio is a Hall of Fame baseball player renowned for his versatility, durability, and leadership during his 20-year Major League Baseball (MLB) career with the Houston Astros. Biggio played multiple positions, including catcher, second baseman, and outfielder, showcasing his adaptability and commitment to the team's success.
Raised in Kings Park, New York, Biggio excelled in multiple sports at Kings Park High School, earning the Hansen Award as Suffolk County's top football player. Opting to pursue baseball, he attended Seton Hall University, where he transitioned from infielder to catcher to meet team needs. Biggio's collegiate performance earned him All-American honors and led to his selection by the Houston Astros as the 22nd overall pick in the 1987 MLB Draft.
Biggio made his MLB debut on June 26, 1988, and quickly became a cornerstone of the Astros franchise. His career statistics include a .281 batting average, 3,060 hits, 291 home runs, 1,175 RBIs, and 414 stolen bases. He is the only player in MLB history with at least 3,000 hits, 600 doubles, 400 stolen bases, and 250 home runs.
Known for his resilience, Biggio was hit by pitches 285 times, ranking second in MLB history.
Biggio’s stellar career was decorated with numerous accolades that reflect his all-around excellence on the field. He was a seven-time All-Star (1991, 1992, 1994–1998), a four-time Gold Glove Award winner at second base (1994–1997), and a five-time recipient of the Silver Slugger Award. In recognition of his character and community service, he was honored with the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award in 2007. The Houston Astros retired his iconic jersey number 7, and in 2015, he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, cementing his legacy as one of the game's greats.2015
After retiring in 2007, Biggio remained active with the Astros organization, serving as a special assistant to the general manager.
