Connie Chung

Connie Chung, pioneer news anchor and reporter, was the first woman to co-anchor the "CBS Evening News" and the first Asian to anchor any national news program on network news. Both were milestones in broadcast history.

Chung started her career in 1969 at age 23 at a local TV station in her hometown Washington, D.C.

In 1971, she joined CBS News at the coveted Washington Bureau, covering politics and government for the "CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite." She was the beat reporter, covering the 1972 Democratic presidential campaign of Senator George McGovern, the Vice Presidency of Nelson Rockefeller and her most memorable story -- Watergate, Nixon’s impeachment and resignation.

In 1993 Chung was named co-anchor of the "CBS Evening News" – a first at CBS.

Chung’s parents were born in China, as were her four oldest sisters. She was the only one born in the U.S. Early on, her father asked her to carry on the name Chung as males do … essentially to be the son her parents never had.

Years later in 2019, Chung discovered Asian parents had named their baby daughters “Connie” in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, creating a sisterhood of Connies. In fact, a living legacy. She was shocked and overwhelmed.

Chung and Maury Povich, the longest running daytime talk show host in broadcast television history, have been married since 1984. They have a son and two daughters.
