Clint Hurdle

Clint Hurdle has built a multifaceted career in professional baseball, transitioning from a highly regarded prospect to a respected manager. Identified as a standout talent by Sports Illustrated at age 20, Hurdle played 515 games at the major league level, primarily as an outfielder. He was selected by Kansas City in the first round, ninth overall, of the June Draft and played for the Kansas City Royals, Cincinnati Reds, New York Mets, and St. Louis Cardinals before a back injury ended his playing career.

Following his playing days, Hurdle developed his expertise in baseball management and coaching. He managed in the New York Mets minor league system for six years, then joined the Colorado Rockies as a minor league hitting instructor for three seasons before becoming the Rockies' hitting coach and later first base coach. Hurdle was named manager of the Rockies, where he led the team to its first World Series appearance. During his tenure, the 2007 Rockies set the highest single-season fielding percentage in Major League history, a record that endures.

Hurdle's managerial impact was further demonstrated with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Taking over a team with a long-standing losing record, Hurdle guided the Pirates to their first winning season and playoff appearance in more than two decades and was named NL Manager of the Year. He managed the Pirates to two additional playoff appearances and won a total of 1,269 games as a manager between the Rockies and Pirates, ranking 38th all-time in managerial history.

Off the field, Hurdle has been open about his personal challenges, including his recovery from alcoholism and advocacy for addiction treatment programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous. He is also a spokesperson for Prader-Willi Syndrome awareness and received the Brooks Robinson Community Service Award from the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association for his contributions.

Hurdle's influence extends beyond coaching and management. He authored "Hurdle-isms: Wit and Wisdom from a Lifetime in Baseball," a book that shares key lessons on resilience, leadership, and growth from his career. Hurdle's ongoing involvement in baseball, including coaching roles and community engagement, underscores his enduring presence in the sport.
