Cliff Douglas

Cliff Douglas has a rich history of involvement in tobacco control initiatives at a national and international level. He currently serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Global Action to End Smoking. He has previously directed the University of Michigan Tobacco Research Network and led the Smoke-Free Environments Law Project, providing expert advice on tobacco control policies. Douglas' commitment to tobacco control also led him to serve as a co-investigator for the University of Michigan’s Center for the Assessment of Tobacco Regulations.

In addition to his work in academia, Douglas has made significant contributions to the American Cancer Society. From 2015 to 2020, he served as the National Vice President for Tobacco Control. He also founded the society's Center for Tobacco Control, further solidifying his position as a key figure in the fight against tobacco. During the Obama administration, Douglas was entrusted with the role of consulting tobacco control policy advisor for the U.S. Assistant Secretary for Health and the U.S. Surgeon General.

On a global scale, Douglas has been instrumental in defending tobacco control laws and advocating for healthier public policies. He was a lead author and editor of the influential report "Ending the Tobacco Epidemic: A Tobacco Control Strategic Action Plan" for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. He also coordinated the national advocacy campaign to prohibit smoking on all commercial airline flights in the U.S. His international work includes serving on the legal team that defended Uruguay in a trade action concerning its tobacco control laws and assisting the government of Thailand in an action that threatened to increase smoking among Thai youth and women.
