Chuck Rose is a filmmaker, screenwriter, and cinematic curator recognized as the founder of Arthouse Film Festival, an institution established to present not-yet-released films to audiences ahead of their public debut. The inspiration for the festival originated from Rose's experiences at the University of Southern California, where Professor Arthur Knight screened unreleased movies followed by discussions with actors and filmmakers. A pivotal moment occurred when Alfred Hitchcock appeared as a surprise guest, an encounter that influenced Rose's commitment to championing serious cinema.
Arthouse Film Festival has grown into a respected curated film series in the United States. Rose has curated and staged more than 2,000 movie premieres, interviewing over 1,300 actors and filmmakers from around the world. The festival features a curated selection of not-yet-released films, including award winners from Sundance, Cannes, Toronto, Telluride, Venice, and SXSW film festivals, as well as prestige studio films screened before their New York theatrical release. Oscar winners and nominees such as Ethan Hawke, Viggo Mortensen, Alan Arkin, Lee Daniels, Frank Darabont, Jesse Eisenberg, Melissa Leo, Chazz Palminteri, John Sayles, Aaron Sorkin, Fisher Stevens, and David Strathairn have participated as guest speakers, sharing insights with festival attendees.
Rose's career encompasses more than festival curation. He has authored 32 screenplays, directed "Vietnam Vets" starring Danny Aiello, worked in the story department at Orion Pictures, and served as a contributing editor at Movies USA, in addition to writing feature articles for The Hollywood Reporter. He has held faculty positions at Seton Hall University, Adelphi University, and The New School for Social Research, where he developed a program in film script analysis adopted by executives at HBO and ABC. His film festivals and symposia have received support from Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, SAG-AFTRA Foundation, Rutgers University, Kean University, Caldwell University, and other organizations in the film industry, academia, and the arts.
Rose has documented and explored the evolution of American and international cinema as founder, curator, and moderator of Arthouse Film Festival for more than three decades. He has also expanded into television as host and executive producer of the series "Cinema Q&A with Chuck Rose" on NYC Life Channel 25, the flagship station of NYC Media. Each week, the show highlights a soon-to-be-released film, with the director, actors, and key talent joining Rose to discuss the film's development, casting, production, and completion.
Rose is an alumnus of the Warner Bros. Writers Workshop and holds an MA in cinema history, criticism, and aesthetics from USC and a BFA in film production from NYU. His academic background, combined with extensive experience as a filmmaker, educator, and festival director, positions him as a knowledgeable voice in contemporary cinema, active in education, television, and film festival programming.
