Christian McCaffrey

Christian McCaffrey is recognized as one of the most complete and versatile offensive players in National Football League history. McCaffrey played college football at Stanford and was drafted by the Carolina Panthers with the eighth overall pick in the NFL Draft. As a sophomore, McCaffrey was named AP College Football Player of the Year and was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy. He holds the NCAA record for most all-purpose yards in a season with 3,864. His college performance translated to the professional level, where he established himself as a dual-threat running back, contributing significantly as both a rusher and receiver.

During his tenure with the Carolina Panthers, McCaffrey set franchise records and entered the NFL record books. He became the third player in league history to record 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in a single season, joining Roger Craig and Marshall Faulk. His production led to a four-year, $64 million contract extension, making him the highest-paid running back in NFL history at that time. McCaffrey's ability to impact the game from multiple positions has influenced the evolution of the running back role in professional football.

After being traded to the San Francisco 49ers, McCaffrey made an immediate impact. In his second game with the 49ers, he became the first running back in franchise history to record passing, rushing, and receiving touchdowns in the same game, and was only the fourth player since the AFL–NFL merger to achieve this. In his first full season with San Francisco, McCaffrey was named Associated Press NFL Offensive Player of the Year, leading the league in rushing yards, yards from scrimmage, and touchdowns. He became the fifth 49ers player to win the award. That season concluded with an NFC Championship and an appearance in Super Bowl LVIII.

McCaffrey's career has also been marked by resilience. After an injury-plagued season in which bilateral Achilles tendinitis and a posterior cruciate ligament injury limited his play, McCaffrey returned to start all 17 games for San Francisco. He rushed 311 times for 1,202 yards and 10 touchdowns, and led the NFL in receiving yards by a running back, catching 102 passes for 924 yards and seven receiving touchdowns. For these efforts, McCaffrey was voted AP NFL Comeback Player of the Year and became just the second player to be nominated for MVP, Offensive Player of the Year, and Comeback Player of the Year in the same season. He also received Best Comeback Athlete at the 2026 ESPYS.

McCaffrey is the first player in NFL history with at least five rushing touchdowns and five receiving touchdowns in four different seasons. He is only the third player in league history to record 50 career rushing touchdowns and 30 career receiving touchdowns, joining Marshall Faulk and Lenny Moore. McCaffrey has also received the Salute to Service Award, presented by USAA, in recognition of his commitment to the military community. Through consistent production and versatility, McCaffrey has become a prominent figure in professional football, known for his contributions as a running back and his impact on offensive strategy in the NFL.
