Chris Fischer

Chris Fischer is an ocean explorer, conservationist, and the founder and expedition leader of OCEARCH, a nonprofit organization focused on advancing marine science through collaborative expeditions that tag and track apex predators. Fischer established OCEARCH to unite fishermen, scientists, and filmmakers in non-invasive research on marine apex predators. His career in ocean conservation began in media, serving as host of the four-time Emmy Award-winning "Offshore Adventures." The program was a widely viewed outdoor TV series with the aim of reconnecting people with the oceans. Fischer's interest in shark conservation grew as he recognized the critical role sharks play in ocean ecosystems and the gaps in scientific knowledge about them.

Fischer acquired a former crabbing vessel equipped with a specialized lift, enabling researchers to tag sharks efficiently. This innovation became central to OCEARCH's research methodology. By bringing together multidisciplinary experts, OCEARCH collects data on white shark migrations, reproductive cycles, genetic status, diet, contaminant loads, fecundity, parasite presence, and infection sites, all within a short timeframe. Fischer hosted TV episodes on National Geographic Channel and History Channel, documenting shark research and bringing marine science to a global audience.

As founder and expedition leader, Fischer has overseen dozens of global expeditions, tagging and releasing hundreds of sharks and other marine animals, and contributing to a significant number of peer-reviewed scientific papers. His data-driven approach emphasizes collaborative, inclusive, and open-source data collection and distribution, influencing ocean environmental protection policies worldwide. The OCEARCH Tracker allows millions of users to follow sharks' movements in near-real time, supporting public engagement and marine science education.

Fischer supports STEM education through a shark-based curriculum, including a K-12 program built around the OCEARCH Global Shark Tracker, enabling students and the public to learn about sharks alongside scientists.
