Chris Fields

Chris Fields is a retired major from the Oklahoma City Fire Department, where he served for more than three decades. Fields joined the department in July 1985, advanced through the ranks, and retired as a major after 31 years and seven months of service to the citizens of Oklahoma City. During his career, Fields responded to numerous emergencies, exemplifying the commitment expected of first responders.

Fields became a prominent figure in American history when a domestic terrorist bombing destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. He was stationed 17 blocks north of downtown when the bomb detonated; Fields and his colleagues felt the blast, saw the smoke, and responded to the scene. There, Sgt. John Avera placed one-year-old Baylee Almon into Fields' arms. Fields cleared concrete dust from her throat and, finding no signs of life, carried her to a nearby ambulance. A freelance photographer captured this moment, and the image, distributed by Associated Press, appeared on front pages worldwide and earned a Pulitzer Prize. The photograph became a symbol of the tragedy and the impact of the attack.

While the public saw an image of heroism, Fields privately dealt with the long-term effects of that day. He has shared his experiences from 31 years in public safety and the personal toll of responding to traumatic events. Fields has spoken about the psychological impact of trauma on first responders, offering a personal perspective on mental health in public safety and emergency response.

After retiring, Fields focused on advocacy and mental health support for first responders. He speaks to emergency personnel about the realities of the profession and the importance of mental wellness. Fields serves as a fire liaison on the advisory board for Survive First, an organization supporting first responders, military personnel, and their families affected by PTSD and substance abuse. He is co-founder and co-host of the webinar "Trauma Behind the Badge" and is a member of the Oklahoma First Responder Wellness Division. Through his work, Fields continues to address mental health, resilience, and wellness in the first responder community.
