Chris Ferrie

Chris Ferrie is a quantum physicist, mathematician, and author whose work encompasses scientific communication, quantum computing, and STEM education. As an associate professor at the University of Technology Sydney Centre for Quantum Software and Information, Ferrie conducts research in quantum estimation and control, as well as machine learning applications in quantum information science. He holds a Bachelor of Science in mathematical physics, a master's in applied mathematics, and a doctorate in applied mathematics focused on probability theory in quantum mechanics from the Institute for Quantum Computing and the University of Waterloo. Ferrie has published more than 48 academic papers in areas such as quantum physics and Bayesian statistics, contributing to advancements in quantum computing and related fields.

Ferrie is widely recognized as the creator of the "Baby University" board book series. Inspired by his experience as a parent seeking accessible science books for young children, Ferrie authored "Quantum Physics for Babies" to introduce complex scientific concepts in an approachable format. The project expanded into a best-selling science series for children, with Ferrie authoring more than 80 books, including titles in the Everyday Science Academy series, the My First STEAM Words series, and several non-fiction works for adults. Notable titles include "General Relativity for Babies," "Rocket Science for Babies," "Astrophysics for Babies," and "8 Little Planets."

Ferrie's educational outreach extends internationally. He participated in the production of a 52-episode online video course, "Physics for Babies," which introduces basic physics concepts to school-age children through stories and interactive games, and is broadcast on online platforms in China. Ferrie also collaborated with China Children's Press & Publication Group to publish the 50-book "Red Kangaroo Thousands Physics Whys" series, which explains physics phenomena through conversational storytelling and covers topics such as everyday physics, quantum physics, Newtonian physics, optical physics, and aerodynamics.

For adult audiences, Ferrie authored "Quantum Bullsh*t: How to Ruin Your Life with Advice from Quantum Physics," addressing the misuse of quantum terminology in popular culture and pseudoscience. He has contributed to public exhibitions, including Questacon's "Quantum Tomorrow: Imagined Futures" at Australia's National Science and Technology Centre. Ferrie co-founded Eigensystems, whose product Quokka—a portable quantum computing emulator—received the Australian Good Design Award in the Scientific Product category for its role in promoting quantum literacy among students and educators.

Ferrie has received recognition for his contributions to quantum science and education, including the Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Researcher Award for his project on quantum artificial intelligence and its applications in information theory and machine learning. His academic and public engagement work spans quantum theory, applied mathematics, artificial intelligence, and technology education, supporting both technical innovation and global quantum literacy.
