Charles Hoskinson

Charles Hoskinson is recognized in the blockchain industry as the founder of the Cardano blockchain and chief executive officer of Input Output Global, the engineering and research company responsible for Cardano's development. An American entrepreneur and blockchain architect, Hoskinson is also a co-founder of Ethereum. He studied mathematics at Metropolitan State University of Denver and the University of Colorado Boulder before transitioning to the cryptocurrency sector. Hoskinson began his blockchain career by launching the Bitcoin Education Project and helping to establish the Cryptocurrency Research Group.

Hoskinson joined Ethereum as one of five original founders, working alongside Vitalik Buterin and serving as chief executive. After departing Ethereum following a dispute regarding the project's direction, Hoskinson focused on formal research and alternative approaches to protocol governance. He later co-founded Input Output, which developed Cardano as its flagship project. Cardano is a proof-of-stake blockchain platform built on peer-reviewed research and layered architecture. Its consensus mechanism, Ouroboros, is designed to offer energy efficiency and security as an alternative to proof-of-work systems.

As chief executive of Input Output Global, Hoskinson has advocated for research-driven blockchain development, formal methods, and proof-of-stake consensus. Cardano is positioned as a platform emphasizing security, scalability, and sustainability. Under Hoskinson's leadership, Cardano has implemented smart contracts, expanded its ecosystem with Hydra scaling solutions, and formed partnerships with enterprises and governments, supporting its reputation as a blockchain designed for real-world utility. Hoskinson views blockchain as a social technology with applications in digital identity, financial inclusion, and transparent transactions.

Hoskinson has contributed to blockchain policy discussions at the government level, including testifying before the U.S. House Subcommittee on Commodity Exchanges, Energy and Credit about blockchain utility and regulation. In addition to his technical and policy work, Hoskinson supports scientific research and philanthropy. He donated $20 million to Carnegie Mellon University to establish the Hoskinson Center for Formal Mathematics and has sponsored blockchain research at the University of Edinburgh, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Stanford University, and the University of Wyoming. Hoskinson also contributed $1.5 million to the Galileo Project expedition led by astronomer Avi Loeb. He maintains a significant public presence, frequently discussing cryptocurrency news, issues, and technology, and has a large following on YouTube, continuing to influence the evolution of decentralized technology.
