Charles Elachi is a Lebanese-American scientist, engineer, and academic recognized for his contributions to space exploration and planetary science. A professor emeritus of electrical engineering and planetary science at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Elachi served as the eighth director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and vice president of Caltech. He began his career at JPL as a student intern and advanced to lead one of the world's leading centers for robotic space exploration. Elachi holds an MS and PhD in electrical science from Caltech, an MBA from the University of Southern California, and a master's degree in geology from UCLA.
Elachi is known for his work in the development and application of spaceborne imaging radar for scientific studies of Earth and other planets. He played a key role in several NASA missions, serving as principal investigator for the Shuttle Imaging Radar series—SIR-A, SIR-B, and SIR-C—co-investigator on the Magellan imaging radar, and team leader of the Cassini Titan Radar experiment. Elachi chaired national and international committees that developed NASA roadmaps for the exploration of planetary systems, the solar system, and Mars. He has authored more than 230 publications in space and planetary exploration, Earth observation from space, active microwave remote sensing, electromagnetic theory, and integrated optics, as well as three textbooks in remote sensing.
During his tenure as JPL director, 24 missions managed by the laboratory were launched, including Genesis, Mars Odyssey, GRACE, Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity, Spitzer Space Telescope, Deep Impact, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, Dawn, Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover, GRAIL, Juno, NuSTAR, and Jason 3. Elachi received the Michael Collins Trophy for Lifetime Achievement from the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum for achievements in aerospace science and technology. He has also been honored with the International Academy of Astronautics' Theodore von Kármán Award for scientific and engineering leadership in planetary science and space technology.
Elachi's accolades include the Space Foundation's General James E. Hill Lifetime Space Achievement Award, the National Academy of Engineering Arthur M. Bueche Award, the Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur from France, the American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics Carl Sagan Award, the Sigma Xi William Procter Prize for Scientific Achievement, and the International von Kármán Wings Award. He was named one of America's Best Leaders by U.S. News & World Report and the Center for Public Leadership at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. In recognition of his contributions to planetary exploration, Asteroid 1982 SU was renamed 4116 Elachi, and the JPL Mission Control Center was named in his honor.
After retiring from JPL, Elachi became professor emeritus at Caltech, continuing to pursue research interests and participate as a science investigator on various missions. He remains an advocate for robust space and Earth science programs. Elachi has also participated in archaeological expeditions in the Egyptian Desert, Arabian Peninsula, and Western Chinese Desert, using satellite data to search for ancient trading routes and buried cities, with some of this work featured in National Geographic magazine.
