Charles Austin

Charles Austin is recognized as one of the most accomplished high jumpers in American track and field history. A self-coached athlete, Austin's career began as a high school senior when he was encouraged by friends to join the track team. On his first attempt, he cleared six feet and finished the year with a personal best of 6 feet, 11 inches. This achievement earned him an athletic scholarship at Southwest Texas University, now Texas State University. After overcoming early challenges, Austin broke school records and won the NCAA Outdoor Championship, studying high jump techniques extensively to refine his skills.

Austin quickly rose to prominence, becoming the American record holder with a jump of 7 feet, 10.5 inches and winning gold at the Outdoor World Championship. After undergoing major knee surgery, he was advised to retire, but he independently rehabilitated his injury and returned to competition. Austin became the first American since 1968 to win Olympic gold in the high jump, setting an Olympic record with a jump of 7 feet, 10 inches—a mark that remains unbroken.

Alongside Javier Sotomayor, Austin is one of only two high jumpers to have won gold medals at the Olympics, Outdoor World Championships, Indoor World Championships, and World Cup Championships. He holds the American and Olympic high jump records, is a two-time World Champion, and a nine-time national high jump champion. Throughout his 15-year professional career, Austin consistently ranked among the world's elite, achieving a jump 22 inches above his own height, which ranks sixth all time. Rolling Stone included Austin in its list of the 100 Greatest U.S. Olympians.

Austin has been inducted into the USA Track & Field Hall of Fame and the Texas Track and Field Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He was selected by the United States Olympic Committee to present the Presidential Olympic plaque at the White House. In the Masters 45–50 age group, Austin set a world record with a jump of 6 feet, 8.75 inches. He is also the author of the book "Head Games: Life's Greatest Challenge," which examines the psychological aspects of athletics and personal achievement, drawing on his Olympic experience to discuss mental preparation and motivation.

In addition to his athletic achievements, Austin has contributed to sports performance and community development. He founded the So High Sports & Performance Center and holds two patents for the Total Body Board and Total Body Board Rack. As a motivational speaker, Austin shares a 10-point plan for success based on his Olympic journey, focusing on mental focus and overcoming adversity. His experiences as an athlete, entrepreneur, and speaker position him as a knowledgeable voice on resilience, self-coaching, and the mental aspects of high performance in sports.
