Channing Gerard Joseph Biography
Channing Gerard Joseph is a TED “Global Visionary” and Smithsonian speaker, award-winning investigative journalist, and longtime professor who has taught at Princeton University, the University of Southern California, and Freie Universitaet in Berlin, among others. His viral TED Talk (How Black Queer Culture Shaped History) has reached more than 1.5 million viewers worldwide.
Joseph’s groundbreaking discovery of William Dorsey Swann—the world’s first self-described drag queen and earliest known LGBTQ+ activist—led to landmark legislation passed by the Washington, D.C., Council. His reporting has changed laws, reshaped public understanding of American history, and ignited national conversations on race, gender, and power.
A contributing writer to The Nation and a former staff editor at The New York Times, Joseph edited 25 Pulitzer winners and helped shape stories that won both Pulitzer and Polk Prizes. His bylines have appeared in The Guardian, The Atlantic, and The Washington Post, and he’s been featured on CBS Mornings, The Daily Show, BBC, and NBC.
Joseph’s honors include the Berlin Prize, Whiting Creative Nonfiction Grant, and fellowships from the Ford Foundation and International Center for Journalists.
