Carl Wieman

Carl Edwin Wieman is a physics and education professor emeritus at Stanford University. His work has reshaped both the frontiers of quantum science and the practice of science teaching. Renowned for his pioneering research on ultracold matter, Wieman’s achievements transcend laboratory breakthroughs — extending into deep, evidence-based transformations in how science is taught and learned.

He began his academic career at the University of Michigan before moving to the University of Colorado Boulder. It was there, at the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics (JILA), that Wieman, working with Eric A. Cornell, successfully produced the first Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in 1995 — an ultracold state of matter in which atoms behave collectively as a single quantum entity. This groundbreaking work confirmed a decades-old prediction by Satyendra Nath Bose and Albert Einstein and opened new pathways in quantum physics research.

In recognition of this discovery, Wieman shared the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physics with Cornell and Wolfgang Ketterle. Their work earned worldwide acclaim for creating and studying Bose-Einstein condensates, significantly advancing our understanding of quantum phenomena at near-absolute zero temperatures.

While Wieman’s scientific contributions are profound, so too is his impact on education. Motivated by early teaching experiences that revealed limitations in traditional lecture-based instruction, Wieman became an outspoken proponent of active learning — teaching methods that engage students in problem solving, collaboration, and real-time feedback.

He founded the PhET Interactive Simulations project, a set of free, research-based online tools that allow learners around the world to explore scientific concepts through interactive simulations. These tools are widely used in classrooms and self-directed study, translated into dozens of languages and accessed millions of times each year.
