Caralena Peterson

Caralena Peterson is a writer, speaker, and educator recognized for her expertise on the concept of "Effortless Perfection"—the cultural pressure on college women to achieve high academic performance, maintain a certain body image, and cultivate a vibrant social life, all while appearing untroubled. Peterson educates students, parents, teachers, and administrators about this phenomenon and its impact on mental health across college campuses in the United States, particularly among women. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in women's studies and public policy from Duke University and a Master of Arts from the Middlebury Bread Loaf School of English.

Peterson is the author of "The Effortless Perfection Myth: Debunking the Myth and Revealing the Path to Empowerment for Today's College Women." The book combines research, historical context, and personal narratives to inform undergraduates and their support networks about the realities of perfectionism, strategies for healing, and ways to foster healthier college experiences. Peterson's work examines how the pursuit of perfection influences self-esteem, confidence, assertiveness, body image, hookup culture, belonging, and mental health.

Peterson has served as a visiting professor at Middlebury College and has five years of teaching experience in English and history at the middle and high school levels.
