Brian Thomas Swimme

Brian Thomas Swimme is a professor at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, where he serves on the graduate faculty in the Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness program and the Ecology, Spirituality, and Religion program. Swimme earned a doctorate from the Department of Mathematics at the University of Oregon, focusing on singularity theory. His department is recognized for integrating contemporary science, indigenous spirituality, classical philosophy, and feminist thought within its master's and doctoral programs.

Swimme's research centers on the evolutionary dynamics of the universe, with a focus on humanity's role within the unfolding story of Earth and the cosmos. He has developed an interpretation of the human as an emergent being within the universe, exploring the intersection of cosmology, evolutionary science, and human meaning-making. His published works include "The Universe Is a Green Dragon," "The Universe Story" (coauthored with cultural historian Thomas Berry), "The Hidden Heart of the Cosmos," and "Cosmogenesis: An Unveiling of the Expanding Universe." These works contribute to the fields of cosmology, autocosmology, and the study of cosmic evolution.

Swimme is the cocreator and host of the Emmy Award–winning PBS documentary "Journey of the Universe" and coauthor of the companion book. In "Journey of the Universe," Swimme and coauthor Mary Evelyn Tucker present the story of the universe by integrating scientific discoveries with insights from Western, Chinese, Indian, and indigenous traditions, examining cosmic evolution through the lenses of creativity, connection, and interdependence. He has also produced three DVD series: "Canticle to the Cosmos," "The Earth's Imagination," and "The Powers of the Universe." Swimme has appeared in the television series "Soul of the Universe" on BBC and "The Sacred Balance" produced by David Suzuki for CBC and PBS.

Swimme has presented at conferences organized by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, The World Bank, UNESCO, the United Nations Millennium Peace Summit, and the American Museum of Natural History. He founded the international Epic of Evolution Society following his participation in the Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion conference at the Field Museum. Swimme serves as director of the Third Story of the Universe at Human Energy, a nonprofit focused on scientific and interdisciplinary research on the future of human collective consciousness. His media work includes the video series "The Story of the Noosphere," created with Devin O'Dea and Monica DeRaspe-Bolles. Swimme's work in cosmology, evolutionary science, and interdisciplinary research continues to engage audiences across academic and public platforms.
