Brandeis Marshall

Dr. Brandeis Marshall is a data scientist, educator, and advocate whose work focuses on the intersection of technology, ethics, and social justice. Marshall is the CEO of DataedX Group, a data ethics and strategy management agency, where DataedX provides learning and development training to help educators, scholars, and practitioners develop responsible data and artificial intelligence practices. Her expertise is rooted in computer science and spans data and AI ethics, data engineering, and culturally responsive pedagogy.

Marshall has held academic positions including Full Professor of Computer Science at Spelman College, where she also served as Chair of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences as an Associate Professor. She is a faculty associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University and was a Practitioner Fellow at the Stanford Program on AI and Civil Society. Marshall has taught more than 1,500 individuals in computing and data across multiple academic institutions. Her research covers business intelligence, algorithm refinement for music recommendations, cost-effective cybersecurity measures, and the use of eye tracking to improve product design.

Marshall authored the book "Data Conscience: Algorithmic Siege on Our Humanity," which examines the influence of data on social equality and the ways bias in software, algorithms, and data structures can reinforce discrimination. The book advocates for greater accountability and ethical considerations in data science and offers guidance on building responsible, human-centered AI approaches. Marshall has worked to increase representation of underrepresented minorities in data science, including through her initiative "Black Women in Data."

As a public speaker, Marshall addresses the racial, gender, and socioeconomic impacts of data in technology for organizations such as Dataiku, Experian, Harvard, the International Institute for Analytics, NeurIPS, Northeastern, Stanford, and Truist. Her thought leadership has appeared in Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung, Medium, OneZero, The Moguldom Nation, and on CNN. She has served as keynote speaker for events such as Penn State's Teaching and Learning with Technology Symposium, and her talks challenge audiences to reconsider their relationship with artificial intelligence. In her presentation on "UnAI-able™," Marshall outlines three categories of human-driven decision-making competencies—contextual awareness, conflict resolution, and critical thinking—that are not replicable by machines.

Marshall contributes to collaborative research and community-building as co-lead of the Atlanta Interdisciplinary AI Network, developing data citizens through humanities-centered critical data literacy workshops and supporting new AI researchers grounded in humanistic inquiry. She also provides data equity scholarship, professional development, and resources as a team member of the NSF Institute for Trustworthy AI in Law & Society (TRAILS), a partnership between the University of Maryland, George Washington University, and Morgan State University. Marshall focuses on making data and AI concepts accessible for practical implementation in both educational and professional settings.
