Bode Miller is recognized as a leading male alpine ski racer in American history. An Olympic and World Championship gold medalist and two-time overall World Cup champion, Miller holds the distinction of being the most successful male American alpine ski racer. He is one of only five men to win World Cup events in all five disciplines and the only skier with five or more victories in each. Miller achieved 33 World Cup race victories, contributing to his reputation in international alpine skiing. His aggressive racing style influenced the evolution of the sport.
Miller's Olympic career spanned five Winter Games. He gained national attention after winning two silver medals at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics in the giant slalom and combined events. His achievements include multiple World Championship medals, with double golds in the giant slalom and alpine combined, as well as in downhill and super-G. Miller's gold medal in the alpine combined at the Olympic Winter Games Vancouver capped a three-medal performance, contributing to Team USA's record-setting medal count in alpine skiing. He continued to compete at the highest level through the Sochi Games, where, at age 36, he earned a bronze in the super-G, becoming the oldest alpine skier to win an Olympic medal. With six Olympic medals, Miller ranks second among Team USA athletes for the most individual Winter Olympic medals.
Miller was known for his independent approach to competition. He separated from the American ski team and spent two years racing independently, traveling with his team throughout the winter season. This period saw him return to win the overall World Cup title and seven World Cup races. Miller's autobiography, "Bode: Go Fast, Be Good, Have Fun," co-written with Jack McEnany, was published by Villard/Random House. He was also the subject of the biographical film "Flying Downhill," which explores his background and philosophy.
After retiring from competitive skiing, Miller applied his expertise to various ventures in sports technology and innovation. He co-founded the ski company Bomber, invested in the apparel brand Aztech Mountain, and co-founded SKEO, a wearable ski tracking app company. Miller joined the Board of Directors of Opex Technologies and became Chief Innovation Officer and investor at Alpine-X, a developer of year-round indoor snowsports resorts. He leads the Turtle Ridge Foundation, supporting youth and adaptive sports through annual fundraising events. Miller also served as an alpine skiing analyst for NBC during the Olympic Games. He was inducted into the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Hall of Fame.
