Bill Self Biography
Bill Self is the head coach of the Kansas Jayhawks men's basketball team and has established a significant presence in college basketball. Self has built a career spanning more than three decades, recognized for consistent performance and a high number of career wins. With 840 career victories, he ranks among the top coaches in NCAA Division I history, reaching this milestone in one of the fastest times recorded in college basketball.
Self's tenure at Kansas began in 2003 and includes two national championships, making him one of only two active coaches with multiple NCAA titles. His teams have secured 16 Big 12 regular season championships, including a record-tying 13 consecutive titles, and have made four Final Four appearances. Under his leadership, Kansas has maintained a reputation as a leading program in men's college basketball.
Self is recognized for his approach to player development and recruitment, having coached 13 NBA Lottery selections, including top overall picks Andrew Wiggins and Joel Embiid. His home court record at Allen Fieldhouse stands at 344-23, highlighting the team's performance at one of college basketball's historic venues. Self has been named conference coach of the year nine times and is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. He has achieved 20 or more wins in every season since 1998 and has guided Kansas to 10 of the program's 17 overall 30-win seasons.
Self's contributions extend to USA Basketball, where he has led teams to gold medals in international competition. Before joining Kansas, he held coaching positions at Oral Roberts, Tulsa, and the University of Illinois, where he achieved a 78-24 record over three seasons, two Big Ten regular-season championships, and three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. A graduate of Oklahoma State University with degrees in organization administration and a master's degree, Self began his coaching career as a graduate assistant under coach Larry Brown. His lifetime contract with the University of Kansas reflects the program's commitment to his leadership and underscores his impact on college basketball.
