Bill Samuels Jr. is a seventh-generation distiller who played a significant role in shaping the American bourbon industry, transforming a family tradition into an internationally recognized brand. Born into a lineage of whiskey makers, Samuels grew up immersed in the world of bourbon, with his parents introducing Maker's Mark Bourbon and influencing the industry.
As a teenager, Samuels gained early business experience by assisting Harland Sanders during the launch of his fried chicken restaurants. He later pursued a career in engineering, specializing in aeronautics and contributing to the design of the Gemini and Polaris missiles. After attending law school and interning at the White House, Samuels joined his father in the family distilling business.
Samuels assumed leadership of Maker's Mark and adhered to his father's advice to maintain the integrity of the whiskey-making process, even as the brand experienced substantial growth. He took charge of marketing, developing distinctive advertising campaigns that set Maker's Mark apart in the spirits industry. A pivotal moment in the brand's history came when Samuels facilitated national media coverage, elevating Maker's Mark's profile.
During his tenure as president and CEO, Samuels introduced several innovations, including the Ambassador program, which fostered brand loyalty among bourbon enthusiasts. He also advanced bourbon tourism, helping to establish the Maker's Mark Distillery as a major destination in Bourbon Country. Samuels contributed to product development by introducing flavor staves to the aging process, resulting in "Maker's 46," a new expression that expanded the brand's portfolio and received critical acclaim.
Samuels has been active in the central Kentucky community, chairing the boards of more than 25 nonprofit organizations. He has received recognition as Kentucky's Entrepreneur of the Year, Louisville's Citizen of the Year, and was honored by Ernst & Young with the Kentucky Lifetime Achievement Entrepreneur Award. He is also a member of the Kentucky Business Hall of Fame and a recipient of the Parker Beam Lifetime Achievement Award at the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame.
As Maker's Mark Chairman Emeritus, Samuels continues to represent the brand globally, sharing insights on bourbon history, brand-building, entrepreneurship, and American whiskey-making. His experience provides a comprehensive perspective on the spirits industry, and he remains an advocate for education, health care, and business in Kentucky.
