Beth Mooney

Beth Mooney is an American financial executive recognized as the first woman to serve as CEO of a top-20 U.S. bank. Mooney earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master of Business Administration from Southern Methodist University. Early in her career, she began in banking as a secretary, despite graduating Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Texas, at a time when finance managers prioritized typing skills over academic achievement.

Mooney's career includes leadership roles in retail banking, commercial lending, and real estate financing at several U.S. banks. Before joining KeyCorp, she served as senior executive vice president and chief financial officer at what is now Regions Financial Corp. Her banking experience also includes positions of increasing responsibility at Bank One Corp., Citicorp Real Estate Inc., Hall Financial Group, and Republic Bank of Texas/First Republic. Mooney joined KeyCorp as vice chair and head of Key Community Bank, later becoming president and chief operating officer, and ultimately CEO and chairwoman.

As CEO of KeyCorp, Mooney guided the bank through the recovery from the financial crisis and led the acquisition of First Niagara Financial Group, a significant industry merger. She was named American Banker's Most Powerful Woman in Banking for three consecutive years, and under her leadership, KeyCorp was recognized as a top-performing regional bank. Mooney was also named Banker of the Year by American Banker and has been recognized by Forbes Magazine as one of "The World's 100 Most Powerful Women" and by Fortune Magazine as one of the Top 50 "Most Powerful Women in Business."

Mooney is known for her advocacy of diversity and inclusion in the financial services industry. She established a chief diversity officer role and a diversity council at KeyCorp, personally chairing the council to oversee efforts to attract, retain, and develop diverse talent. Mooney required that candidate lists for leadership positions include women and minorities. Under her direction, KeyCorp increased investments in community revitalization and developed products and services for underserved consumers, earning an outstanding Community Reinvestment Act rating from federal regulators throughout her tenure as CEO. She received the Corporate Responsibility Award from the Foreign Policy Association and the Women of Note Legacy Award from the Cleveland Foundation.

Mooney's legacy in banking and finance continues through her involvement on the boards of AT&T, the Federal Advisory Council, The Business Council, and Catalyst. KeyBank honored her commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion with investments in local institutions, including the establishment of The Beth E. Mooney Center for Transformative Leadership at Cleveland State University.
