Arthur Levine

Arthur E. Levine is the president of Brandeis University, an education scholar and an academic administrator recognized for his contributions to higher education leadership, institutional governance, and teacher preparation.

Levine began his academic career as a professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where he chaired the Higher Education Program and the Institute for Educational Management. He later served as president of Bradford College in Massachusetts before being appointed president of Teachers College, Columbia University.

During his tenure at Teachers College, Columbia University, Levine focused the institution's mission on addressing the equity gap in American education, initiating what became the Center for Educational Equity. He led a $155 million capital campaign, expanded the faculty, increased research grant activity, consolidated academic departments, and enhanced college services.

As president of the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, Levine expanded the organization's reach in teacher preparation and STEM education. He oversaw the creation of the Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship, a program designed to attract recent graduates and professionals in science, technology, engineering, and math to teach in high-needs areas. Levine also established the Woodrow Wilson Academy of Teaching and Learning in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He published a series of reports critiquing the state of teacher education in the United States, highlighting issues of under-resourcing and inadequate preparation for educators.

Levine is the author of 13 books and numerous reports on higher education, professional education, and institutional governance, including "The Great Upheaval: Higher Education's Past, Present, and Uncertain Future." His other works include "When Hope and Fear Collide: A Portrait of Today's College Student," "Generation on a Tightrope: A Portrait of Today's College Student," and "Beating the Odds: How the Poor Get to College." Levine has received honors such as Carnegie, Guggenheim, and Rockefeller Fellowships, the American Council on Education's Book of the Year Award, 25 honorary degrees, and membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Levine has served as the tenth president of Brandeis University, initially as interim president before formal installation. He introduced a new model of liberal arts education at Brandeis, realigning teaching and research into four academic schools that integrate theoretical learning with practical applications. His initiatives include a competency-based second transcript designed to provide a comprehensive view of students' skills and abilities, supporting career readiness and workforce development.
