
Ari Shapiro has reported from diverse locations, including above the Arctic Circle and aboard Air Force One, covering wars in Iraq, Ukraine, and Israel, and filing stories from five continents. In September 2015, Shapiro joined the team of Kelly McEvers, Audie Cornish, and Robert Siegel as one of the rotating hosts on NPR's "All Things Considered," an award-winning afternoon news magazine.
Prior to this, Shapiro was NPR's International Correspondent based in London, from where he covered a wide range of topics for NPR's national news programs. He joined NPR's international desk in 2014 after four years as White House Correspondent during President Barack Obama's first and second terms.
In 2012, Shapiro embedded with the presidential campaign of Republican Mitt Romney. He was NPR Justice Correspondent for five years during the George W. Bush Administration, covering a tumultuous period in the Department's history. That same year, Shapiro won the Daniel Schorr Journalism Prize for an investigation of methamphetamine use and HIV transmission. Throughout his journalism career, Shapiro has been recognized multiple times with the Edward R. Murrow Awards and was named Journalist of the Year in 2023 by NLGJA. He also received a Doctor of Humane Letters honorary degree from the University of Portland in 2023.
In June 2020, he began co-hosting a daily podcast titled "Consider This" and went on to host the seventh season of the reality TV series "The Mole" on Netflix starting May 16, 2024. Shapiro's debut memoir, "The Best Strangers in the World: Stories from a Life Spent Listening," published in 2023, became a New York Times bestseller.
Shapiro is also an occasional singer and has been a guest with the band Pink Martini since 2009, appearing on four of their albums. Since his debut at the Hollywood Bowl in 2009, Shapiro has performed live at many of the world's most storied venues, including Carnegie Hall in New York, L'Olympia in Paris, and Mount Lycabettus in Athens. In 2019, Shapiro embarked on a cabaret career with a show titled "Och & Oy! A Considered Cabaret."
Born in Fargo, North Dakota, and raised in Portland, Oregon, Shapiro is a magna cum laude graduate of Yale. He began his journalism career as an intern for NPR Legal Affairs Correspondent Nina Totenberg. He announced his departure from NPR in 2025, with his last day being September 26.
