Anthony Rao

Dr. Anthony Rao is a psychologist who holds a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. For more than 20 years, Dr. Rao worked in the Department of Psychiatry at Boston Children's Hospital. He served as an instructor at Harvard Medical School, supervising and training clinical staff in the use of Cognitive Behavior Therapy, or CBT. His primary practice is in Lexington, Massachusetts.

Dr. Rao has lectured at numerous colleges, including Emerson College, Tufts University, and Boston University. He regularly presents at conferences and parenting groups and conducts workshops for professionals who work with children and young adults.

Dr. Rao has been the featured expert on documentaries for the A&E series "Investigative Reports" and MTV’s "True Life" series. Dr. Rao has been interviewed for articles in many publications, including The New Yorker, The Washington Times, Parent's Magazine, The Boston Globe, The Chicago Tribune, and The Toronto Globe and Mail. His editorial letters and opinions have appeared in Newsweek, Scientific American, and New York Magazine. He appears as an expert commentator for television news stories and has been a guest on several radio programs.

His first book, "The Way of Boys: Promoting the Social and Emotional Development of Young Boys," was released in paperback, Summer 2010 by HarperCollins. His most recent book, "The Power of Agency: The 7 Principles to Conquer Obstacles, Make Effective Decisions, and Create a Life on Your Own Terms," was released Spring of 2019 by St. Martin’s Press, Macmillan.

Dr. Rao is a nationally recognized expert in child and family psychology. He started his career as a psychologist at Boston Children’s Hospital and, for more than twenty years, was an instructor at Harvard Medical School. He’s been a featured expert on documentaries and news programs and has been interviewed for articles in numerous publications. His most recent book is The Power of Agency, a practical guide to promote human agency in a world of competing demands, confusing messages, and constant distractions.
