Anna Frebel

Anna Frebel is a German-born observational astronomer and astrophysicist whose research addresses the origins and early evolution of the universe. Frebel serves as head of the Astrophysics Division in the Physics Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where her work centers on discovering and analyzing the oldest stars in the Milky Way and its satellite dwarf galaxies. Her expertise in stellar archaeology and dwarf galaxy archaeology has advanced the understanding of chemical and physical conditions in the early universe. By studying metal-poor stars, which preserve a record of early chemical enrichment, Frebel isolates and examines signatures of individual nucleosynthesis events.

Frebel earned her doctorate from the Australian National University and completed postdoctoral research as a W.J. McDonald Fellow in Austin, Texas, and as a Clay Fellow at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Among her significant discoveries are the identification of the star HE 1327-2326, one of the most chemically primitive stars known, and the red giant star HE 1523-0901, estimated to be about 13.2 billion years old. Frebel and her research group utilize the 6.5-meter Magellan telescopes in Chile for high-resolution optical spectroscopy and collaborate with theorists to connect observational data with large-scale cosmological simulations.

Frebel's contributions to astrophysics have been recognized with honors such as the Annie Jump Cannon Award from the American Astronomical Society, a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation, and inclusion in ScienceNews Magazine's "Ten Scientists to Watch." She was named an American Physical Society Fellow for her work on low-metallicity stars, near-field cosmology, and the r-process in astrophysics. Frebel has authored more than 160 papers in refereed journals, including Nature and Science, and is a tenured faculty member at MIT.

Committed to science communication, Frebel engages public audiences through lectures, magazine articles, interviews, and her book "Searching for the Oldest Stars: Ancient Relics from the Early Universe." Her research using the world's largest telescopes has provided insights into the formation of the first stars and the chemical evolution of galaxies, contributing to the field of stellar archaeology.

Frebel co-founded the MIT graduate and postdoc program LEAPS — Leadership and Professional Strategies and Skills, and instructs leadership courses for women through MIT Professional Education. She participated in the Homeward Bound initiative in Antarctica, focusing on strategic planning and collaborative leadership for women in STEMM. Frebel's educational efforts have been recognized with the Irwin Sizer Award for the Most Significant Improvement to MIT Education by the MIT Graduate Student Council. Her work spans astrophysics research, science education, and leadership development in STEM.
