Andrzej Sapkowski

Andrzej Sapkowski is a Polish fantasy writer known for his significant contributions to the genre. Sapkowski wrote multiple novels and short story collections that have sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. Before his writing career, he worked as a senior sales representative for a foreign trade company. His proficiency in Russian, English, and German enabled him to access Anglophone fantasy and science fiction that was otherwise unavailable in Polish.

Sapkowski's literary career began when he wrote his first short story, "The Witcher," to enter a contest by Polish science fiction and fantasy magazine Fantastyka. The story was published and received strong responses from both readers and critics.

In response to reader demand, Sapkowski wrote 14 additional stories before starting a series of novels. The short story collections "The Last Wish" and "Sword of Destiny" achieved commercial success, leading to the development of The Witcher Saga. Sapkowski wrote one book per year until the fifth and final installment. A standalone prequel novel, "Season of Storms," was published later, followed by another prequel, "Crossroads of Ravens." The series centers on Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter known as a witcher. Sapkowski's writing is recognized for its blend of folk tales, contemporary realism, and the influence of Slavic mythology.

The Witcher Saga has been adapted into video games, television, stage productions, and comic books, and has been translated into 37 languages. Sapkowski is the second most-translated Polish science fiction and fantasy writer after Stanisław Lem. The third video game installment, "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt," became a global bestseller, and the Netflix television series adaptation expanded "The Witcher" into a global multimedia franchise, increasing sales of the original books.

Outside the Witcher universe, Sapkowski authored the Hussite Trilogy, which is often cited as his magnum opus. The trilogy combines epic adventure, chivalric romance, and picaresque elements, set during the Hussite Wars.

Sapkowski has received numerous honors, including five Zajdel Awards, the David Gemmell Award, the World Fantasy Life Achievement Award, and the Gloria Artis Medal for Merit to Culture. He also won the Polityka Passport award and is a member of the Polish Writers Association. Sapkowski's work has established him as a prominent figure in fantasy literature, with a readership that spans the globe.
