Andrew Russell

Andrew Russell is a South African author, storyteller, and keynote speaker whose experiences are closely connected to the legacy of Nelson Mandela. As a white South African who witnessed the end of apartheid and the country’s first democratic elections, Russell offers a personal perspective on South African history, leadership, and social change. After earning degrees in commerce and human resource management, as well as a high school teaching diploma, Russell taught for eight years before transitioning to entrepreneurship in the tourism industry.

Russell founded the sports-related charity sport4kids, which raises funds and collects sports equipment for disadvantaged youth seeking opportunities in sports. His involvement in social impact initiatives and youth development has been a consistent theme throughout his career.

Russell’s partnership with Christo Brand, Nelson Mandela’s former prison guard and later friend, deepened his engagement with Mandela scholarship. Russell served as Brand’s business manager and later as editor for the updated edition of the book, "Doing Life with Mandela: My Prisoner, My Friend."

Russell is the author of "The Leadership We Need – Lessons for Today from Nelson Mandela," a book that explores leadership lessons drawn from Mandela’s life and South Africa’s transformation. Proceeds from the book support sport4kids, furthering Russell’s commitment to youth empowerment and community development.

As a keynote speaker, Russell addresses topics such as South Africa’s journey to democracy, leadership inspired by Nelson Mandela, and the unifying power of sport. He has spoken to audiences in South Africa and the United States, including at UMass Boston, The Henry Ford Museum, and with the San Antonio Spurs, and has served as a guest lecturer aboard Queen Mary 2. Russell’s presentations focus on leadership, service, empathy, and the role of sports in uniting communities.
