Alvin E. Roth

Alvin E. Roth is a leading economist recognized for his pioneering work in market design, a field focused on creating systems that efficiently and fairly match supply with demand. Roth holds the Craig and Susan McCaw Professorship of Economics at Stanford University and is the Gund Professor of Economics and Business Administration Emeritus at Harvard University. He has contributed extensively to game theory, market design, and experimental economics, emphasizing the application of economic theory to real-world challenges. Roth's academic background includes an undergraduate degree in operations research from Columbia University and a doctorate from Stanford University. He has held faculty positions at the University of Illinois, the University of Pittsburgh, Harvard University, and Stanford University.

Roth was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences jointly with Lloyd Shapley for the theory of stable allocations and the practice of market design. He is a founder and designer of the New England Program for Kidney Exchange, which enables incompatible patient-donor pairs to find matching donors through a large pool, increasing the likelihood of successful transplants and improving outcomes in organ transplantation.
