Allison Applebaum

Dr. Allison Applebaum is a clinical psychologist, caregiving scientist, and advocate whose work has influenced the landscape of family caregiver support in healthcare. As professor of geriatrics and palliative medicine and director of the Steven S. Elbaum Family Center for Caregiving at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Applebaum leads research and clinical initiatives addressing the psychosocial needs of caregivers—individuals who play a critical role in the care of patients with chronic and life-limiting illnesses. Previously, she founded the Caregivers Clinic at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the first program in the United States dedicated to comprehensive psychosocial care for caregivers, establishing a national model for caregiver support.

Applebaum has authored more than 100 scientific publications, reviews, and book chapters focused on caregiver burden, mental health, and supportive interventions. She served as editor of the textbook "Cancer Caregivers" (Oxford University Press) and is the author of the narrative nonfiction guide "Stand By Me: A Guide to Navigating Modern, Meaningful Caregiving" (Simon Element), which is recognized in caregiving literature. Her research has received funding from institutions including the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society, reflecting her expertise in caregiver mental health, palliative care, and psychosocial oncology.
