Alberto M. Carvalho

Alberto M. Carvalho is the superintendent of Los Angeles Unified School District, the nation’s second-largest school district. Carvalho has overseen the launch of a comprehensive strategic plan, advanced STEAM education through makerspaces, and implemented programs such as the Education Transformation Office and Cultural Arts Passport. His leadership has contributed to strengthened partnerships with local municipalities, progress toward environmentally sustainable schools, and improved district credit ratings, resulting in financial savings for the district.

Prior to his role in Los Angeles, Carvalho served as superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools for 14 years. During his tenure, the district earned national recognition, including the Broad Prize for Urban Education and the College Board Advanced Placement Equity and Excellence District of the Year. He has received honors such as National Superintendent of the Year, the Harold W. McGraw Prize in Education, and recognition from the National Association for Bilingual Education. Carvalho is recognized for his expertise in education transformation, school finance, and leadership development, and is a frequent contributor to education policy discussions.

Carvalho serves on the National Assessment Governing Board and advisory committees for the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, as well as Harvard’s Program on Education Policy and Governance. His public speaking and board service focus on urban education, community resilience, and educational equity.
