Alaa Murabit

Alaa Murabit is a Libyan-Canadian physician, global security strategist, and human rights advocate recognized internationally for her leadership in peacebuilding, women’s empowerment, and inclusive policymaking. Emerging as a prominent voice during Libya’s post-revolution transition, Murabit became widely known for championing the role of women and youth in conflict resolution and democratic development across the Middle East and beyond.

Born in Canada to a Libyan family and raised between cultures, Murabit studied medicine while simultaneously becoming deeply involved in community organizing and international advocacy. In 2011, during the Libyan revolution, she co-founded The Voice of Libyan Women, a grassroots organization focused on advancing women’s participation in politics, peace processes, and civil society. Through the organization, she launched nationwide initiatives addressing gender-based violence, political inclusion, and the misuse of religion to justify discrimination against women.

Murabit quickly gained international recognition for her ability to connect issues of security, public health, economic opportunity, and gender equity. Her TED Talk, “What My Religion Really Says About Women,” became one of the most widely viewed talks on faith and feminism, helping establish her as a leading global speaker on inclusive leadership and social change. She has since advised governments, multilateral organizations, and NGOs on sustainable development, peace and security, and youth engagement.

Over the course of her career, Murabit has held senior advisory roles with the United Nations and other international institutions, including serving as a UN High-Level Commissioner on Health Employment and Economic Growth. She has been recognized by organizations such as Forbes, Fortune, and TIME for her influence in global affairs and social impact. As a keynote speaker, Murabit is known for her compelling, solutions-oriented presentations that explore leadership, global justice, women’s rights, innovation, and the intersection of identity and public policy. Her work continues to inspire audiences around the world to rethink traditional approaches to power, representation, and peacebuilding.
