Ajay Piramal

Ajay Piramal is an Indian industrialist and philanthropist who serves as chairman of Piramal Group, a global business conglomerate with interests in pharmaceuticals, financial services, and real estate. The group operates in 30 countries, with products sold in more than 100 markets. Piramal is recognized for transforming his family's textile business into a diversified global enterprise.

After the deaths of his father and brother, Piramal assumed leadership of the family businesses and, identifying challenges in the textile sector, diversified into pharmaceuticals by acquiring Nicholas Laboratories. Under his leadership, the company, later renamed Nicholas Piramal, expanded through acquisitions, including the Indian subsidiaries of Roche, Boehringer Mannheim, and Rhône-Poulenc, establishing Piramal Group as a significant player in the pharmaceutical industry. He also led the redevelopment of three Piramal factory buildings in Mumbai into Crossroads, India's first major shopping mall. Piramal orchestrated the sale of the group's domestic formulations business to Abbott Laboratories for $3.8 billion, one of the largest transactions in the Indian pharmaceutical sector.

Piramal sold Piramal Glass to Blackstone for $1 billion and subsequently demerged the pharmaceutical and financial services businesses of Piramal Enterprises, with Piramal Pharma listed as a separate entity. Piramal Enterprises also completed a $4.7 billion acquisition of Dewan Housing Finance Corporation Ltd, creating one of the largest affordable housing finance companies in India. Beyond pharmaceuticals, Piramal acquired an 11 percent stake in Vodafone India, later selling it at a 51.78 percent premium. He serves as a non-executive director of Tata Sons, the holding company of Tata Group.

Piramal is a member of Harvard Business School's Board of Dean's Advisors, co-chair of the UK-India CEO Forum, president and chairman of Anant National University, and chairman of the Pratham Education Foundation. He contributes to several national committees, including the Prime Minister's Council for Trade & Industry, the Board of Trade, and the Task Force on Pharmaceuticals and Knowledge-Based Industries. His work has been recognized with honors such as the Honorary Commander of the Order of the British Empire, the Business Leader of the Year Award, and CNBC Asia's India Business Leader of the Year Award. He has also been named Global Leader of Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum and recognized as an Outstanding Philanthropist by Forbes.

Piramal advocates responsible entrepreneurship, emphasizing a philosophy of 'Doing Well and Doing Good' that guides the group's stakeholder and community engagement. He is a proponent of trusteeship and responsible business practices, drawing inspiration from the Bhagavad Gita, and co-authored the book "The Light Has Come to Me" on management lessons from the text. The Piramal Foundation, his philanthropic initiative, operates across 25 states in India and has impacted more than 112 million lives through programs such as Piramal Swasthya, Piramal Sarvajal, and Piramal School of Leadership.
