Detailed Biography of JD Gibbs

During Gibbs’ tenure as president, JGR has won two NEXTEL Cup Series championships with Bobby Labonte in 2000 and Tony Stewart in 2002.

Also during Gibbs’ time as president, the team has expanded from a one-car operation, with Bobby Labonte and the No. 18 Interstate Batteries Chevrolet, to a three-car team that also fields the No. 20 Home Depot Chevrolet for Tony Stewart and the No. 11 FedEx Chevrolet for Jason Leffler. The team also fields Busch Series entries for J.J. Yeley and Denny Hamlin.

In addition to the NEXTEL Cup and Busch Series efforts, Gibbs has overseen a successful JGR diversity program, which was formed in 2003 with the late Reggie White, an NFL defensive standout from 1985-2000. Chris Bristol, an African-American, and Aric Almirola, a Hispanic, competed in NASCAR-sanctioned late-model stock-car races in 2004 at Caraway Speedway in Asheboro, N.C., and Ace Speedway in Altamahaw, N.C., respectively.

Gibbs’ experience in racing is not limited to the management side however. He made five Busch Series starts in 1998 and 1999 and five starts in the Craftsman Truck Series in 2000. Before that, he competed in the Busch North Series as well as in late-model stock car at several tracks in North Carolina.

He also served as an over-the-wall pit crew member during the first few years of JGR and was a tire-changer for the team’s first win, in the 1993 Daytona 500 with Dale Jarrett.

Before working in racing, Gibbs played football at The College of William and Mary. He wore No. 11, the number of the FedEx Chevrolet driven by Leffler, from 1987-90 as a defensive back and quarterback.During Gibbs’ time at W&M, the team made the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs twice, and posted a school-record 10-win season during his senior year.

Gibbs lives in Davidson, N.C. with his wife, Melissa, and their four children, Jackson, Miller, Jason Dean and Zachary Taylor.
