| In brief |
Five-time
All-NBA star Charles Barkley had many critics, but no one questioned
his heart. On the basketball court, he gave 110 percent of his
blood, sweat and tears. Off the court, he was a leader in his
locker room and to less fortunate fans. |

| He
was a 6'5" power forward for the Philadelphia 76ers, the Phoenix
Suns, and the Houston Rockets, an eleven-time NBA All Star, and one
of the most provocative, irreverent, and charismatic figures in all
of sports. Some call him the greatest villain that basketball has
ever seen, others call him the game's greatest entertainer. In his
own words, "There will never be another player like me. I'm the
ninth wonder of the world." He is Sir Charles.
Charles Barkley grew up in Leeds, Alabama, where he was raised
by his mother and grandmother. Charles attended Auburn University
and was the Southeastern Conference Player of the Decade for the
1980s. He joined the NBA in 1984 and played eight seasons with the
76ers. Charles was selected the 1989-90 Player of the Year by both
Sporting News and Basketball Weekly, and he was the MVP of the 1991
NBA All Star Game.
In 1992 Charles Barkley represented the United States and won a
gold medal as a member of the USA "Dream Team." It was
during these Olympic Games in Barcelona that the rest of the world
discovered the personality that American basketball fans already
knew. That year, Charles was traded to the Phoenix Suns, which he
helped transform into a powerhouse in the NBA West. In 1993, Charles
and the Suns battled his close friend Michael Jordan and the Chicago
Bulls in the NBA Finals. He was the NBA's Most Valuable Player in
1992-93.
During the 1995-96 season, Charles reached a huge career milestone
by scoring his 20,000th point and grabbing his 10,000th rebound.
He also had the honor of repeating as a Dream Team Member at the
Atlanta Olympics, where he again virtually stole the show. After
winning his second gold medal, Charles was traded to the Houston
Rockets, where he completed his career. For sixteen unforgettable
seasons, Charles was a league leader in rebounding and in heart,
and was a perennial member of the NBA's All-Interview Team.
Off the court, he has appeared in many innovative and memorable
television commercials, for products including Nike, McDonald's,
Gillette Right Guard, Charles Schwab, and AT&T. Whether battling
Godzilla, expounding on personal hygiene during a foxhunt, or romping
on a basketball court with Bugs Bunny, Charles remains a much sought-after
commercial endorser. He has written two books (published by Simon
& Schuster and Warner Books), starred in an NBA video and two
comic books, and has appeared in several films, including "Space
Jam" for Warner Bros.
Within a few weeks of his retirement, Charles began a career as
a leading in-studio analyst for "NBA on TNT" broadcasts
for Turner Sports. His plans call for simultaneous careers in television
and feature films.
