Tom Scott emerged as an entrepreneur at a young age when he started selling provisions to people stuck in the gas lines in his native Maryland. When Tom Scott and his college pal, Tom First, tried mixing peach juice and water in a blender in 1989, they did not imagine their little experiment would result in the creation of a multi-million dollar company. Yet that is exactly what happened with Nantucket Nectars in less than 10 years. The tale of how “Tom and Tom” flourished in the highly competitive beverage industry demonstrates the power of entrepreneurial drive and creative spirit to transform a dream into a reality.
Nantucket Nectars quickly grew to national prominence, putting it on the “Inc. 500″ list of fastest growing U.S. companies for five years in a row. Scott’s groundbreaking work as CEO garnered him several awards and accolades, including the Mercury Award for Advertising, Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year award, several leadership and design awards, and was featured in the documentary film “Lemonade Stories.” In 2002, Scott and his partner sold Nantucket Nectars to Cadbury Schweppes.
In 1998, Scott began the transition from juiceguy to mediaguy when he invested in Nantucket Television and, in 2002, bought the channel. In 2004, Scott launched Plum TV, Plum TV, a network that caters to affluent viewers in their playgrounds. “Vacation is an amazing time to reach people in the right way,” Scott says. “People make major purchase and life decisions.” Hence Plum TV’s mix of smart fare like “Open Exchange,” a series of sit-downs with titans of industry, and upscale-lifestyle programming. Serving as Chairman and CEO, Scott has helped Plum TV grow from a single channel on Nantucket to a network of 8 local television channels and websites serving over 14 million people a year.
Plum is available to an additional 4.5 million homes onDemand throughout New England and Colorado and can be seen on Joost, iTunes, and on all Delta flights. Scott also serves as executive producer for the Neistat Brothers Television Show and, because of his work with Plum, was named a 2007 Maverick by DETAILS, lauding him as an “innovator in media.”
At the lecture podium, Scott provides a glimpse into the entrepreneurial spirit as he recounts his journey with Nantucket Nectars. Speaking with candor and eloquence, Scott reveals how he and his partner took a simple idea of providing the best quality, all natural juices to the public and built a small business into a multi-million dollar franchise. Scott continues his journey with his second entrepreneurial baby, PlumTV, and looks at the struggles and success that have come about in launching local television channels, with no experience in the field. His story inspires executives in small companies and large corporations, everywhere.
Scott currently serves on the Board of Directors of several companies and is committed to many community organizations, serving on the board of directors of DoSomething, Shackleton Schools, and FlexCar. Scott lives in Connecticut with his wife, Emily, the founder of J.Crew, and their two sons. He is also an avid pilot and surfer.
