Previously, he spent five years at NPR, where as director of vertical initiatives, he launched and supervised teams of broadcast and digital journalists covering race, ethnicity and culture, education, and global health and development. He also worked with member stations on editorial strategy, coached and edited beat reporters, and co-authored the NPR Ethics Handbook.
Prior to NPR, Thompson worked for the Knight Foundation, the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the Fresno Bee, and the Poynter Institute. He is the vice-chairman of the board of the Center for Public Integrity and a co-founder of Spark Camp.
