Tim Mack Biography

Tim Mack did not pole-vault in the state meet in high school.  He was not highly recruited to pole-vault in college.  He competed at Malone University in Canton, Ohio for three years until he was good enough to make the track team at the University of Tennessee. he won an Indoor NCAA Title in 1995, but soon after, failed to make the 1996 Olympic Team.

Still determined, he decided to train for the Olympics in 2000.  When not in class for Graduate School, he coached pole-vault, worked as a janitor, and worked the night shift in a factory.  He struggled through injury and struggled to make ends meet.  He then failed to make the 2000 Olympic Team.

Disappointed, but undeterred, he decided to sacrifice the next four years to make the Olympic Team in 2004.  He made his AOL user name, "Goldnathens," to remind him of his sacrifice.  He developed his own workout programs, developed his own pole-vault drills, studied the technique of other pole-vaulters and studied the training programs of other coaches.  All of this hard-work culminated in 2004 where he won the USA Olympic Trials with an Olympic Trials Record of 19'4 and finally made his first Olympic Team.

His journey, then took him to Athens, Greece for the 2004 Olympic Games.  He knew he was on the verge of something great, but knew he had to be relentless in sticking with his plan, focusing on his cues, and dealing with distraction.  He would plan out the few weeks preceding the Olympic Games.  He planned his meal times, his workout times, and the times he would go to bed and wake up.  He also had detailed tactical plans of the upcoming Olympic competition.  He was prepared for everything.

Hours into the competition Mack was down to his last attempt of the competition and he was in second place.  Even though Mack was as confident and focused as he could ever be, doubt started to creep in at this moment.  Then, Mack thought of his AOL user name he had for four years, Goldnathens, and immediately crushed all doubts.  He went on to clear 19'6" to win the Olympic Games on his last jump.  It was a personal best and also an Olympic Record.
