The stage name deadmau5 originated from an incident involving a dead mouse found in his computer, leading to the moniker after an online chat room registration.

Zimmerman's career began in the late 1990s, influenced by chiptune music and the demoscene, using Impulse Tracker for his early productions. He established the record label mau5trap and gained international attention when his single "Faxing Berlin" was played on BBC Radio 1.
