Young the Giant is an American indie rock band known for blending anthemic stadium rock, indie pop, and layered storytelling within the alternative music scene. The band features Sameer Gadhia on lead vocals and auxiliary percussion, Jacob Tilley and Eric Cannata on guitars, Payam Doostzadeh on bass guitar, and François Comtois on drums. Formerly performing as the Jakes, Young the Giant signed with Roadrunner Records and released their self-titled debut album, which marked their entry into the alternative rock landscape.
The debut album, produced by Grammy Award winner Joe Chiccarelli, featured singles such as "My Body" and "Cough Syrup," both of which achieved high positions on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart and received Platinum certification from the RIAA. The band performed at the MTV Video Music Awards, which contributed to the album's appearance on the Billboard 200. Morrissey, a British artist known for his critical perspective on modern music, publicly praised the album. Young the Giant also performed songs from their debut album on MTV Unplugged.
With subsequent releases, Young the Giant continued to evolve artistically. Their second album, "Mind Over Matter," released through Fueled by Ramen, showcased a heavier sound and was supported by extensive touring. The third album, "Home of the Strange," explored themes related to America's political climate, the immigrant backgrounds of the band members, and literary influences such as Kafka. Both albums reached the Top 20 of the Billboard 200 and solidified the band's presence at major festivals including Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, and Lollapalooza. The band achieved a Top Ten position on the Rock Albums chart with "Mirror Master" and later released a four-part Acts EP series culminating in the album "American Bollywood."
"American Bollywood" represents Young the Giant's most ambitious and personal project, structured around the Mahabharata and divided into four acts. The album draws from Bollywood media, psychedelic surf rock, and spaghetti western film scores, reflecting the band's collective immigrant roots and Gadhia's personal experiences. This release marked their first as an independent artist, with distribution through Jungle Youth Records and AWAL.
Sameer Gadhia has also contributed to the music industry by hosting the podcast "Points of Origin" on SiriusXM's Alt Nation, focusing on amplifying artists of color. Young the Giant's ability to address themes of identity, belonging, and the immigrant experience through alternative rock has established the band as a prominent force in the genre, with a dedicated global following.
