Yorgos Lanthimos

Yorgos Lanthimos is an award-winning Greek director who has directed a variety of works, including dance videos in collaboration with Greek choreographers, TV commercials, music videos, short films, and theatre plays and has photographed editorials and fashion brand campaigns.

Kinetta, his first feature film, played at Toronto and Berlin film festivals to critical acclaim. His second feature, Dogtooth, won the Un Certain Regard Prize at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, followed by numerous awards at festivals worldwide. It was nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award in 2011. Alps won the Osella for Best Screenplay at the 2011 Venice Film Festival and Best Film at the Sydney Film Festival in 2012.

Lanthimos began transitioning from Greek-language to English-language films in 2015, beginning with his first English-language feature film, The Lobster. This film was presented In Competition at the 68th Cannes Film Festival and won the Jury Prize. It also won Best Screenplay and Best Costume Design at the 2015 European Film Awards, in addition to a nomination for a Best Original Screenplay Academy Award. Colin Farrell was nominated for a Golden Globe and a European Film Academy Award for his performance in the film.

His fifth feature film, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, premiered in Competition at the 70th Cannes Film Festival and won the Best Screenplay award. It was nominated for Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Actor in the European Film Academy Awards. Lanthimos' 2018 film, The Favourite, with Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, and Rachel Weisz, premiered at the 75th Venice Film Festival, won the Grand Jury Prize - Silver Lion, and Olivia Colman won the Copa Volpi - Best Actress Award. The film received a record ten BIFA awards and was nominated for twelve BAFTAS, winning seven of them. It was also nominated for ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and two nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress, which Olivia Colman won.

In 2023, Lanthimos directed and produced Poor Things, which won the Golden Lion at the 80th Venice International Film Festival. It was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director and Best Picture. Based on the 1992 novel of the same name, Poor Things was a notable achievement in Lanthimos's career. Following this, Lanthimos completed a short silent film - Bleat, with Emma Stone and Damien Bonnard - to be screened only with music played by a live orchestra. This film premiered in May 2022 at the Greek National Opera.

Lanthimos is currently working on several projects. His upcoming film Kinds of Kindness will reunite him with actors such as Emma Stone, Willem Defoe, Margaret Qualley, and Joe Alwyn. He is also in the process of adapting "My Year of Rest and Relaxation" and remaking the 2003 Korean sci-fi comedy Save the Green Planet!
