Yan Gomes

Yan Gomes is a Brazilian-American professional baseball catcher known for his defensive reliability, veteran leadership, and role in one of the most historic championship runs in modern baseball. Born in Mogi das Cruzes, Brazil, Gomes moved to the United States as a child and grew up in Tennessee. He played college baseball at University of Tennessee, where he developed into a versatile player before transitioning fully to catcher—a move that would define his professional career.

Gomes was selected in the 10th round of the 2009 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays and made his major league debut in 2012, becoming one of the first Brazilian-born players in MLB history. He gained prominence after being traded to the Cleveland Indians (now the Guardians), where he emerged as a key contributor behind the plate. Known for his strong arm, pitch framing, and ability to manage a pitching staff, Gomes earned a reputation as one of the league’s more dependable defensive catchers.

His career reached a defining moment in 2019 with the Washington Nationals. Serving as the team’s primary catcher, Gomes played an integral role in guiding the pitching staff throughout a postseason run that culminated in a World Series championship—the first in franchise history. His game-calling and steady presence were widely credited as crucial to the Nationals’ success.
