Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Biography
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is an Emmy and Tony Award–winning actor celebrated for his versatility, charisma, and depth across film, television, and theater. Born in New Orleans and raised in Oakland, California, he initially studied architecture before earning an MFA from the Yale School of Drama. He first rose to prominence in Netflix’s "The Get Down" as the flamboyant Cadillac. His breakout film roles followed in "Aquaman," "Us," and "The Trial of the Chicago 7," where his performances drew widespread acclaim.
Abdul-Mateen earned a Primetime Emmy Award for his powerful portrayal of Cal Abar/Doctor Manhattan in HBO’s "Watchmen," and in 2023, he won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his Broadway debut in "Topdog/Underdog." The honor affirmed his reputation as one of the most dynamic and multifaceted performers of his generation.
He continued to expand his range with roles in "Candyman," "The Matrix Resurrections," and Michael Bay’s "Ambulance." He starred in the award-winning historical legal drama film "The Trial of the Chicago 7," which earned six Oscar nominations. He will reprise his role as Black Manta in "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom."
