William Gibson

William Gibson is an American-Canadian speculative fiction writer and essayist known for pioneering the science fiction subgenre of cyberpunk. His early works are characterized by noir, near-future narratives that examine the effects of technology, cybernetics, and computer networks on society, contributing to the iconography of the Information Age before the widespread adoption of the Internet. Gibson coined the term "cyberspace" in his short story "Burning Chrome" and further popularized it, along with the concept of the "matrix," in his debut novel "Neuromancer."

"Neuromancer" is widely recognized as a cornerstone of cyberpunk literature and received the Hugo Award, the Philip K. Dick Memorial Award, and the Nebula Award. The novel follows a 22nd-century data thief navigating a corporate-controlled society and the global computer network's cyberspace matrix. Gibson expanded this universe with "Count Zero" and "Mona Lisa Overdrive," completing the Sprawl trilogy. He later collaborated with Bruce Sterling on "The Difference Engine," a novel set in Victorian England that drew attention to the emerging steampunk genre and was nominated for the Nebula Award for Best Novel.

Gibson's novels "Pattern Recognition," "Spook Country," and "Zero History" are set in a contemporary universe and reflect an evolution in his writing style, shifting from traditional science fiction to broader speculative fiction. These works explore cultural changes in post-September 11 America, including themes of tribalism, societal infantilization, and the intersection of paranoia and technology.

Gibson returned to overt technological themes with the Jackpot trilogy, including "The Peripheral" and "Agency." "The Peripheral" was adapted into a television series produced by Amazon. Gibson is recognized for popularizing the term "cyberspace" and for his insights into the rise of the Internet, reality television, and techno-culture. His nonfiction collection, "Distrust That Particular Flavor," compiles essays on technology and culture. He has also received the EFF Pioneer Award.

Throughout his career, Gibson has authored more than 20 short stories and 12 novels, contributed to major literary, culture, and news publications, and collaborated with performance artists, filmmakers, and musicians. His work has influenced academia, design, film, literature, music, cyberculture, philosophy, and technology.
