Willard Wigan

Willard Wigan, MBE, is a British micro-sculptor recognized for creating some of the world's smallest handcrafted artworks. His intricate figures and structures, which fit onto pinheads, eyelashes, or within the eye of a needle, are visible only under magnification. Individual sculptures can measure as small as 0.005 millimeters. Wigan often spends months completing a single piece, working between heartbeats to avoid hand tremors. To paint his creations, he uses a hair from a dead fly, maintaining a commitment to avoid harming living creatures for his art.

Wigan's artistic journey began in childhood, shaped by undiagnosed dyslexia and autism spectrum disorder. He was ridiculed in school for his learning differences and found solace in creating miniature worlds, starting at age five by carving tiny objects for ants using splinters of wood and toothpicks. Encouraged by his mother, Zeta Wigan, he continued to develop his craft. As an adult, Wigan worked in a factory for two decades while sculpting at night. His work gained public attention when he carved a large bust of William Shakespeare in a shopping center storefront, attracting an art buyer and a reporter.

Throughout his career, Wigan has produced a diverse body of micro-sculptures spanning history, religion, pop culture, and portraiture. His subjects include scenes such as Noah's Ark, The Last Supper, The Titanic, and Pieta, as well as a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II sculpted on a coffee bean and a model of St. Bartholomew's Church on a grain of sand. He has depicted the Obama family in the eye of a needle and Muhammad Ali on the head of a match. Wigan created what is recognized as the world's smallest sculpture by hollowing out a dot of beard stubble and inserting a golden motorcycle measuring just 3 microns. Guinness World Records recognized Wigan for creating the smallest handmade sculpture in the world, depicting a human fetus.

Wigan holds two Guinness World Records, has been appointed a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, and received an honorary doctorate from University of Warwick for his contributions to visual arts. A 70-piece collection of his micro-sculptures was insured by Lloyd's of London for nearly $13 million. The Miniature Society of New York and the National Association of Miniature Enthusiasts have both honored Wigan with lifetime achievement awards. He also served as a judge on the television show "The Great Big Tiny Design Challenge," where competitors created miniature furniture.

Wigan is a public speaker on creativity, resilience, and neurodiversity. He has appeared as a guest speaker at the TED Conference in Oxford and on "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien." He has been featured in a Channel 4 documentary and has appeared on international television, radio, and talk shows. His micro-sculpture art has been exhibited globally and collected by celebrities. As an advocate for dyslexia awareness, Wigan shares his story to inspire others facing learning challenges, emphasizing that small-scale art can have a significant impact.
