WhoMadeWho is a Copenhagen-based experimental pop trio known for redefining the boundaries of electronic music. The group comprises singer and bassist Tomas Høffding, jazz guitarist Jeppe Kjellberg, and drummer and producer Tomas Barfod. Each member contributes a distinct musical background, blending influences from indie rock, dance-punk, house, disco, and synthwave to create a genre-defying sound.
WhoMadeWho gained early recognition through a series of 12-inch releases on Gomma Records, including "Out the Door" and "Space to Rent," leading to their self-titled debut album. The debut was supported by remixes from prominent names in electronic music and established the band within the underground scene. Subsequent albums such as "The Plot," "Knee Deep," "Brighter," "Dreams," and "Through the Walls" were released on labels including Kompakt and Get Physical. Their song "Space for Rent" was covered by Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, and their single "TV Friend" was remixed by Hot Chip, highlighting the band's cross-genre appeal.
WhoMadeWho is recognized for both studio recordings and dynamic live performances. The trio has shared stages with acts such as Daft Punk, Soulwax, Hot Chip, Justice, and LCD Soundsystem, and has performed at major festivals including Roskilde, Sónar, Burning Man, and Coachella. A notable performance for Cercle at the ancient temples of Abu Simbel in Egypt reached a global audience. Their live tour, featuring stage design in collaboration with architecture group BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group), included shows in cities such as New York, Paris, Los Angeles, and London, culminating at Forum Arena in Copenhagen. This tour earned WhoMadeWho the Best Live Performer award at the Beatport Awards.
Beyond touring and recording, WhoMadeWho founded their own record label and boutique festival series, both called The Moment, which focus on communal presence and music appreciation. The album "UUUU," influenced by 90s and 00s electronica and 80s post-disco, was launched at Koko in London and reinforced their reputation in contemporary electronic music. Their eighth studio album, "Kiss & Forget," released on The Moment, features collaborations with artists such as RY X, Blue Hawaii, Adriatique, and Kölsch, and blends indie electronic, pop, house, and synthwave. With a career spanning more than two decades, WhoMadeWho is regarded as a defining act in the global underground electronic music scene.
