Wang Chuanfu

Wang Chuanfu is a Chinese chemist, engineer, and entrepreneur recognized as the founder, chairman, and CEO of BYD Company, a multinational conglomerate specializing in electric vehicles, battery technology, and electronics manufacturing. Wang graduated from Central South University of Technology with a major in metallurgical physical chemistry and later earned a Master of Engineering from Beijing Nonferrous Metals Research Institute. He began his career as an engineer and deputy director at Beijing General Research Institute of Nonferrous Metals and served as general manager of Shenzhen Beagle Battery Co., Ltd. before founding Shenzhen BYD Industrial Co., Ltd.

Identifying a market opportunity in mobile phones and anticipating industry shifts as Japan phased out nickel-cadmium batteries, Wang left his previous role and established BYD outside Shenzhen at age 29, initially funded by a loan from his cousin. Under Wang's leadership, BYD expanded into several sectors, including BYD Auto, which produces passenger battery electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid EVs, and BYD Electronics, which manufactures electronic components and assemblies.

Wang's acquisition of the struggling Xi'an Tsinchuan Auto Company marked BYD's entry into the automotive market. His strategy focused on integrating battery technology with automotive manufacturing, leading to the mass production of electric vehicles. BYD has become the world's best-selling EV manufacturer, surpassing competitors in global sales. The company also overtook Volkswagen as China's top-selling car brand, reflecting its growth from a battery manufacturer to a leader in the automotive industry. Berkshire Hathaway invested in BYD, recognizing the company's potential in electric mobility and clean energy.

Wang has served as a founding member of the Sustainable Development Advisory Committee of the United Nations Development Programme and has received honors such as CCTV's Person of the Year in China's Economy and the Individual Lifetime Achievement Award of the Zayed Future Energy Award. He has been recognized by Bloomberg's The Green 30, Fortune's list of influential leaders, and Forbes China's Top 50 CEOs.
