Vikram Pandit is an Indian-American banker and investor whose career spans more than four decades in global finance. He holds four degrees from Columbia University: a BS and MS in electrical engineering, an MBA, and a PhD in finance. Pandit completed his doctoral thesis, "Asset Prices in a Heterogeneous Consumer Economy," at Columbia Business School. Before entering the private sector, he taught economics at Columbia as a doctoral student and served as an assistant professor at Indiana University in Bloomington.
Pandit joined Morgan Stanley and advanced to president and chief operating officer of the company's institutional securities and investment banking businesses. He contributed to the development of Morgan Stanley's electronic trading platform and prime brokerage division. In partnership with John Havens and Guru Ramakrishnan, Pandit co-founded the hedge fund Old Lane LLC, which was later acquired by Citi. Following the acquisition, Pandit became chairman and CEO of Citi Alternative Investments and subsequently led Citi's Institutional Clients Group.
Pandit was appointed CEO of Citigroup and guided the company through a significant economic and financial crisis, overseeing recapitalization, restructuring, and revitalization efforts. During this period, Pandit testified to Congress about his decision to take a $1 annual salary until the company returned to profitability, a move that drew widespread attention within the banking industry. He became the first Indian-American to lead a major American bank.
Pandit received the Padma Bhushan, the third highest Indian civilian award, for his contributions to trade and industry. After leaving Citigroup, Pandit became chairman and chief executive officer of The Orogen Group, an operating company focused on long-term strategic investments in financial services and related businesses. He serves on the boards of ExlService Holdings, Fair Square Financial Holdings, Westcor Land Title Insurance Company, and JM Financial Credit Solutions, as well as on the Board of Overseers of Columbia Business School and the Board of Visitors of the Columbia School of Engineering and Applied Science. Pandit is recognized for his perspectives on banking, fintech, and digital transformation, and remains active in discussions about innovation and adaptability in the financial sector.
