Vijay Prashad

Vijay Prashad is an Indian historian, journalist, and Marxist intellectual whose work has influenced the study of Global South politics, anti-colonial movements, and Western imperialism. Prashad serves as executive director of the Tricontinental Institute for Social Research, editor of LeftWord Books, writing fellow and chief correspondent at Globetrotter, and senior non-resident fellow at Renmin University of China's Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies. He is recognized for his critiques of capitalism, neocolonialism, American exceptionalism, and Western imperialism, as well as his support for communism and the Global South.

Prashad's academic career includes serving as the George and Martha Kellner Chair in South Asian History and professor of International Studies at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. He has also held the Edward Said Chair at the American University of Beirut and has been a senior fellow at the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs in Beirut. Prashad founded the Tricontinental Institute for Social Research, a Marxist think tank named after both a conference of nations held in Cuba and the Frankfurt Institute for Social Research, home of the Frankfurt School of critical theory.

He is the author of 40 books, including "The Darker Nations: A People's History of the Third World," which was selected as the Best Nonfiction book by the Asian American Writers' Workshop and received the Muzaffar Ahmed Book Award. "The Darker Nations" is available in multiple languages, with editions in India and Pakistan and translations in Arabic, Mandarin, and Turkish. Prashad's other works include "Washington Bullets," "Red Star Over the Third World," "The Poorer Nations: A Possible History of the Global South," and "How the International Monetary Fund Suffocates Africa," co-authored with Grieve Chelwa. He has appeared in the films "Shadow World" and "Two Meetings."

As a journalist, Prashad serves as chief correspondent for Globetrotter, a project of the Independent Media Institute, and is a columnist for Frontline, writing regularly for The Hindu and BirGun. His commentary addresses key geopolitical flashpoints, including the NATO-led military intervention in Libya, which he analyzed in his book "Arab Spring, Libyan Winter." Prashad has also written extensively about the Bolivian political crisis, describing Evo Morales' removal from the presidency as a coup d'état and critiquing the Organization of American States' role in the event.

Prashad's work in global inequality, postcolonial politics, and Marxist historiography has contributed to reframing the history of the Global South as a narrative of political agency and solidarity among formerly colonized nations. His output across books, journalism, lectures, and film positions him as a widely read public intellectual in leftist thought and international affairs.
